I was a revolutionary when I was young and I just prayed: “Lord, give me the power to change the world.” When I approached middle age and realized that half of my life had passed without changing a single soul, I changed my prayer to: “Lord, give me the grace to change everyone I meet, just my family and friends.” And I will be satisfied. Now that I am old and my days are numbered, I am beginning to realize how foolish I have been. My only prayer now is: “Lord, give me the grace to change myself.” If I had prayed for this right from the beginning, I would not have lost my life. – Mystery of the Middle East

The Buddha taught an example that illustrates this type of thinking. A man, the father of a little boy, left his son at home and went away for a few days. When he returned, he found that his house had been burnt down by robbers. He saw the charred remains of a boy near the ruins of a house. At that moment, he believed that it was the body of his little son and threw himself down and beat his chest in sorrow. The next day he performed a cremation ceremony, collected the ashes and put them in a beautiful silk bag. This man was very attached to his little son and carried a bag of ashes wherever he went. He did not know that his son was still alive, he was captured by bandits.
After some time the boy managed to escape. At midnight he arrived at the house rebuilt by his father. When he knocked on the door and asked his father to open the door, the man, convinced that his son was dead, became angry. He shouted, “Go. don’t bother me. My son is dead.” The boy tried again and again to convince his father that he was his son, but the man’s belief that his son was dead was too strong for him to listen. Finally the young man gave up and left.
