On each of these trials, participants were shown one of the following cues: red apple, red tomato, red pepper, green cucumber, green broccoli, or green lime. They must try to visualize or avoid the object for more than 7 seconds. If something pops into their head while they’re trying to avoid thinking, they press the button to show the record. Participants saw an image with a mixture of red and green at the end of 7 seconds and indicated which of the colors was dominant. What is the result?
It was found that when they tried to suppress a particular cue containing one of the colors, they were more likely to report that color as the most dominant color when they saw a red-green picture. For example, when trying to avoid thinking about green cucumber, broccoli, or lime, most reported green as the dominant color. This also applies to those who did not press the button and thought they had succeeded in suppressing the mind. Sensory cognitive tracking can still be measured, UNSW lab director Joel Pearson explained.

The results of this research show that while controlling thoughts is not easy, trying to do it using the more popular method of suppression is an exercise in futility. This is because even when we think we are successful, the traces of this thought fly outside our consciousness.
If suppression fails, substitution works. In an attempt to find a better strategy for mind control, researchers at the UNSW lab conducted another experiment. This time, instead of simply asking participants to avoid thinking about the object they saw, they were asked to think about something else—a distraction, so to speak. For example, let’s say they want to remove or push to the background the “red apple” cue they saw. All participants need to do is think of blue skies and voila! The thought of the color red disappears.
Various experts have proven this method to work consistently. For example, social psychologist Daniel Wegner conducted a “focused distraction” or substitution experiment after his suppression method failed. In this experiment, he asked participants not to think of a polar bear and to think of a red Volkswagen. As you might guess, the result was the same as that of Pearson and his colleagues.

They all learned to associate faces with pictures of negative emotional scenes (such as a picture of a tragic accident) or neutral scenes (such as a picture of the sky).
The participants were divided into two groups, A and B. The members of group A had enough sleep, while those in group B were completely sleep deprived. The next morning, members of both groups were shown the faces and told to avoid thoughts related to the scenes with which the faces had previously been associated. As a result, those who are sleep-deprived have difficulty keeping unwanted thoughts out of their minds, even after exercise. For heavy sleepers, the task becomes easier with practice. So there is no doubt that sleep is an important step in controlling thoughts.
